The main dividing factors among humans for these years have been race, ethnicity and skin color. Brazilian photographer Angélica Dass who wishes to break down these barriers executed her latest project, Humanae. She’s operating a mission to take pictures of every skin color which we can see in the world. Her objective is to prove that diversity runs beyond the standard limits of white, black, red, and yellow.

This mission, Humanae rapidly gained momentum shortly after its beginning in early 2016, and thanks to an extensive social media campaign, Dass successfully snapped over 200 portraits while traveling through 19 different international cities in the world. She followed a ritual of first taking the photos of the subjects against a white background, then selecting a 11-pixel square from each of their noses and matching the color to its corresponding Pantone industrial palette shade. This becomes each photo’s background. She prefers shuffling all the photos and presenting them as a ‘mosaic’ without making them in a gradient order as in a spectrum. She expects to show the contrasts and equality between each varied tone.

Angélica Dass holds is very keen on her project, as she was aged up in a mixed-race family in Rio de Janeiro. She has faced a number of discrimination due to her skin color. “Every time I take a picture, I feel that I am sitting in front of a therapist,” she shared her thoughts during a 2016 TED Talk. “All the frustration, fear, and loneliness that I once felt… Becomes love.” However, Humanae is going to work out and serve people until the dividing walls among humans fall down just as the human evolution and unique identity and appearance.
